Do you have any idea how long I’ve wanted to overhaul my OWN photography blogsite? I’ve been so inspired by the client projects I’ve had, that I’ve been itching to play with my own site to see how far I can go with my own ideas. I had to start with my logo of course. It’s been a very, much needed process of finding out who I am and how I can translate that into my logo. I’m sure you all know what I’m talking about. Well, since I also have a history in the architecture field (and still do it from time to time), I did want to incorporate it in there somehow, and also the fact that I consider myself a designer-of-all-trades, so to speak.

Of course I had to go ahead and flash animate the logo as well, (you know I just had to). My colors changed as well, to a palette more vibrant than before. The layout of the blogsite is hopefully unique and easier to navigate than before. The “fake out” splash page actually has the blog entries below the initial flash content and includes a “read the blog” button to easily take you there in case you didn’t notice the blog section. I cleaned up the navigation menu items and put the archive links in an enhanced footer, making it SO much cleaner and nicer in my opinion.

So voila! Here’s the finished product. http://designfocusstudio.com
Hopefully you are as inspired by it as I have been by your blogs. I guess time will tell if my PHOTOGRAPHY clients like it too.

Happy February!
In the wake of the discovery that I CAN create flash logos after all, I wanted to offer them with new custom blog packages. You must have an existing logo for it to be converted to an animated flash. If you know exactly how you want your logo to be animated but don’t know if it’s do-able, contact me and I can take a look at your logo and see if I can achieve what you want before you sign up for the blog package.

If you haven’t seen the latest animated logos I’ve done, see the last 2 posts here and here.

This offer expires February 15th.

Thank you to everyone willing to be guinea pigs with their logos. I came up with some fun designs. If you’re interested in getting your existing logo made into an animated flash, please contact me for a quote. Prices start at $75. If you’d like it embedded into your splash page or blog, the cost is an additional $50.

I had so much fun with these! (These are looped for your viewing pleasure. Finally product stops after first loop.)

Oh fun day! I think I’ve tweeted and posted about this everywhere. I’ve finally gotten my head straight enough to learn Flash and am starting to animate logos. Check these out:

For now I’m practicing and playing, so if anyone has a logo that they’d like animated, contact me and I’ll give it a shot. Eventually when I get good enough I’ll start charging it as part of our services.

Yeah, so I’m just a ((little)) behind on the social networking thing, but better late than never, right? Hey, as one of my New Year’s resolutions, I’m surprised I managed to accomplish it before January was over (because we all know resolutions are moot after January).

So without further ado, you know the drill!

I wanted to post some examples of portfolio gallery formats that can turn your blog into a blogsite. Come back here for more examples added.
Pretty much any of these galleries can be styled to match your branding colors.

EXAMPLE 1
Slideshow Pro version, additional $29 cost for 3rd party software. This one is pretty exciting because I’ve been using SlideshowPro for years and this is the first time I’ve tried out the plugin for Wordpress. There are a ton of options that can be configured for this one, so I’m only going to show a few of them here.

Numbered navigation, fade transition

EXAMPLE 2
Thumbnail navigation, slide transition, bottom navigation

EXAMPLE 3
Minimalist look. LOVE THIS ONE! Navigation is hidden until mouse hover. Next and Previous hover links appear as well.

As you can tell, all of these slideshows can be embedded in a post, but the best way to utilize them is to build your portfolio galleries with them. Even better, you can use them for client proofing. Just insert them into a password-protected page and send the link and password off to your client!

Wow, only a couple weeks left of the year! I’m sure everyone is frantically rushing around finishing up print orders, delivering to clients, and of course doing their personal holiday shopping. The inevitable is in sight though; a New Year is coming and a lot of us will be asking ourselves how we can freshen up and improve our presentation to clients.

Well here are a couple ideas for you to chew on while you’re also munching on those Christmas cookies:

  1. Pricing structure for custom blogs and blogsites will change in January, so from now until January 5th, they are on sale for $350 and $450 respectively. Save $50 off the old pricing!
  2. Custom horizontal layouts are coming soon! The design is at the testing stage right now, but if you want to volunteer to be a guinea pig (your current layout would be intact), please contact me. Get a sneak peek of it here: http://blogsforphotogs.com/horizontal
  3. Flash logos coming soon! I am currently in talks with a graphic designer who is interested in collaborating with me to provide this service. Prices for flash animated logos start at $300.
  4. Lastly, but not least, Wordpress has release version 2.9, with some outstanding new features. I will be test driving the new version this week hopefully, so if you’re in dire need of an upgrade, I would start thinking about this right away.

Hopefully that will get your creative juices flowing and get you thinking about changes you want to make for your business’ internet presence. Cheers and Happy Holidays to all!

I’m going to try and post any time there is a new Wordpress version release, just so I can keep you guys up to date and on the ball when it comes to making sure your blogs run smoothly.

Here is what Wordpress.org says about 2.8.6:

“2.8.6 fixes two security problems that can be exploited by registered, logged in users who have posting privileges. If you have untrusted authors on your blog, upgrading to 2.8.6 is recommended.”

This may or may not apply to most of you, but it’s better to be safe than sorry, especially with all the hacking going on these days. I know some of you (yeah, you know who you are) are in dire need of an upgrade and probably don’t know it. The best way to find the version you have installed is to look at the footer section of your admin panel. If you have anything below 2.7, you really need to upgrade but may not have the built-in upgrade utility or plugin to do so. If that’s the case, you can request an upgrade from me.

  1. Laurie wrote: So when I check mine to see what version I have, I just upgraded this summer with you, if it's not 2.8.6 I can upgrade it myself? Also can I get that "share" tiles installed with each of my posts? Let me know the cost... Thanks, Laurie (11/18/09, 5:07 pm)

  2. Theresa wrote: Yup, you should be able to upgrade it yourself. Backup your database first before you do any upgrading though. Go to Tools-->Backup to run it. I'll e-mail you about the extra work you want done. ;) (11/18/09, 7:37 pm)

I know it’s been a while since I’ve featured a blog. I’m really excited about showcasing this one, because I think it came out so beautifully. Pam Cooley came up with the layout herself, a combination of soft, subtle colors and an elegant custom font, and building it turned out to be very fun, albeit challenging at times. The galleries showcase her beautiful work, so make sure to check them out.  Thanks Pam for letting me work on this with you!
